The CalCloud Portfolio consists of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Vendor Hosted Subscription Services (VHSS), Assessment/Migration Services and Email (CA Mail and CCES). The portfolio provides services to our customers through the California Department of Technology Service Catalog.

IaaS

Cloud computing has emerged as a cost-effective and reliable technology to deliver information technology services offered on-demand and via a pay-per-use model. Cloud computing plays a significant role in improving the delivery of government services in the State of California.

The CDT issued a Cloud Computing Policy to capitalize on the benefits of cloud computing. agencies and State entities are to utilize the cloud services provided through the CDT, for all new IT Projects when feasible.

To meet customer demand, CDT launched the CalCloud program which is comprised of the following services:


VHSS

Based on customer demand, CDT has initiated and executed contracts with specified vendors based on lines of business for their subscription-based services, and passes the vendor's service charges, plus the CDT's administrative and technical overhead costs on to the subscribing customers. These requests will follow the VHSS on-boarding process by the defined lines of business.

VHSS offers customers a variety of benefits:

  • The ability to leverage their department's data center budget line item.
  • Eliminate the need for your department to perform a formal procurement.
  • Provides for negotiated enterprise service level agreements.
  • Provides a better understanding of the State's portfolio for subscription services.
  • Ease of onboarding.
  • Volume pricing.
  • Compliant with Cloud First Policy (SAM 4983) and Government Code 11545-46.

How are new Lines of Business (LOB's) determined?

The VHSS portfolio will be expanded based on customer demand.

Lines of business are prioritized by customer AIO's and CIO's. Customer subject matter experts (SME's) participate in developing requirements. The next LOB's in development include:

  • eSignature / Digital Signature
  • Internal and Public eSignature solutions
  • Offsite Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR)
  • Data and System backups
  • Long term

Assessment, Planning and Implementation Services

The California Department of Technology (CDT) can help customers acquire assessment, planning and implementation service contracts to enable migration to CDT services. The assessment, planning and implementation contract will provide customers the ability to assess their overall departmental portfolio or assess a specific application for suitability to migrate to CDT services. Planning and implementation services can be provided for the transition of applications to CDT services, including CalCloud IaaS CDT managed services.

Assessment, planning and implementation services for migrations to VHSS will need to be contracted via the customer's procurement process.

CDT's initial plan was to establish contracts with up to six vendors to perform these services. Upon detailed analysis, it became apparent that it would be best to handle each customer assessment, planning, and implementation effort through separate procurements. The customer-specific approach will enable CDT to address the unique requirements of each customer environment, ensure the vendor with the best skills and experience is selected each time, and extend the opportunity for participation to the maximum number of vendors.

CCES

CalCloud Email Services (CCES) is a cloud computing, dedicated email environment for the State of California where the email hardware and software are housed at Microsoft data centers. CCES data is replicated from the primary to the backup data center which is in a different geographic location, providing advanced security and reliability. Microsoft data centers meet a variety of industry standards and certifications including ISO 27001 and SAS 70 Type II.

CA Mail

The CA.mail service provides customers with email and related messaging services that are reliable and secure. This service is based on client-server architecture. The servers contain all mailboxes (in-boxes, calendars, contacts, deleted items, sent items and tasks) and public folders. This service provides virus protection, spam filtering, data backup and recovery, connectivity to other email systems (including Internet email), and the statewide global address list.
